In my office we have 2 shifts at night, 4pm to 1am Monday thru Friday, my schedule, and 6pm to 6am that rotates . The manager for the 12 hour shifts was going to let everyone except 1 person go home, someone has to be here to watch the phone through their whole shift.

She asked for a volunteer to stay, no one would volunteer, t hey just argued amongst themselves about why they should each get to home. Finally, the manager who is super chill and never gets mad, just said “F ine , we are staying together like a big happy family.”

Now they are all staying and being salty. Hahahaha.

As someone working Christmas, not much sympathy for no one being a team player.

Just count the hours as overtime, and someone will volunteer to stay.

The last time I had to work Christmas was way back in the Navy. There was an understanding there that single people had watch on Christmas while married people worked New Year's.

It was the same when I was in the Army, sometimes people that didn’t have anything to do on h olidays would volunteer or switch shifts for money to cover whatever was needed. It usually worked out.

Ineffective management . That shift should have been determined months and months ago so each household could accommodate as necessary. Expecting someone to volunteer for that shift the night before, then punish everyone for not falling on the sword... Great team building exercise (extreme sarcasm).

Or pay triple time (had a job like that once) and someone will suddenly get motivated.

The 12 hour shifts workers are always supposed to be here unless they are on vacation or Christmas day . The only day we are “closed” is Christmas, when they take they 12's it is with the understanding that they will be here over holidays. We do keep minimal people here put there does need to be people here all the time, except Christmas .

The upper management plan is, you work 12's, you will be here. Their manager was just trying to be nice because there is no real need for them to all be here, there just isn’t enough going on. The plan was upper management never finds out.
